Our History

Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence

Howe School of Excellence is named in honor of Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910), a prominent abolitionist, social activist and poet. Howe is perhaps best known as the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” which she wrote in 1861 after visiting Abraham Lincoln in Washington D.C.

Howe School of Excellence opened in 1896. The building originally contained 8 classrooms and was called the Lorel Avenue School before it was renamed for Howe in 1904.

The north wing was built in 1911, adding 13 classrooms and a combination gymnasium and assembly hall.

Starting in 2008, the building was extensively renovated, including adding four classrooms in former attic space, and separating the gymnasium from the newly built lunchroom (where the former auditorium seating was located). A dilapidated annex building was torn down and a new turf field was built in 2011.

Today, Howe contains 27 classrooms and serves 555 students.

AUSL

AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Howe School of Excellence to AUSL in 2008 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.

AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
